About

OBAKENG MOLEPE HAS BEEN CREATING WORK AS A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS. IN 2014, HE HONED HIS SPECIALISATION INTO COMMERCIAL, FASHION, PORTRAITURE AND DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY AND HASN’T LOOKED BACK.

Molepe’s work has been featured in some of the world’s major magazines and brands including: New York’s Desundo Magazine, Elle, adidas and was commissioned by Marvel to work on a Black Panther-based project, to name a few. His accolades don’t stop there – in 2016, he was selected as one of South Africa’s Top 100 artists for Sasol’s Signature Showcase.

His style and motivations are reminiscent of photographers who tap into the “anti-aesthetic” movement – creating art that gives a new definition to the ideals of beauty and questions what society had labeled as beautiful. His work also questions male masculinity and other social constructs, such as gender and religion.

Molepe is an artist who’s getting people to question the status quo, and question society as it stands – and he doesn’t provide easy answers or solutions to the tensions brought to light by his work. As his work grows and reaches wider audiences, there’s no doubt that Molepe’s career will continue to rise. - Between 10 and 5.
